Shalon Joanne Pais State women’s Champion

05.05.10 Mangalore : Karnataka State women’s Chess Championship 2010,
organized by South Kanara District Chess Association concluded today at
Subramanya Sabha, Mangalore. Mr M S Gururaj, President and Mr K Sudhakaran
joint secretary of SKDCA distributed the prizes to the winners.
Shalon of Mangalore, Manasa K of Mangalore, Gangamma B N of Mysore, and
Vanessa D’souza of Mangalore will represent Karnataka State in the
forthcoming Women’s National B Chess Championship.

In the final and fifth round on the top board Gangamma B N of Mysore played
with white pieces against Shalon Joanne Pais of Mangalore, Shalon opted
Sicilian Najdrof f defence . In the 21st move shalon moved her g6 pawn that
move made her pawn down, Gangamma failed to convert this advantage in to win
at the 71st move both signed for peace and the game ended in draw. This half
point helped Shalon to wear the championship crown.
In the second board Manasa K of Mangalore played with white pieces against
Vanessa D’souza of Mangalore. Vanessa opted scilian defence with black
pieces ,Manasa played closed sicilian variation. The position was slightly
better to Manasa in the middle game Vanessa played very nicely and on 70th
move both agreed for draw .
In the fourth round, on the first table Shalon Joanne Pais of Mangalore
played with white pieces against sole leader of the tournament Manasa K of
Mangalore, Shalon opted king’s pawn opening Mansa played irregular opening
as reply .In the 19th move Manasa made a mistake by moving her knight to
opponent’s court Shalon trapped the knight by gaining the piece forced
Manasa to resign the game at 46th move, and stoped the leader.
In the second board Vanessa of Mangalore with white pieces played against
Pavitra Jagtap of Bangalore Vanessa played King’s Pawn opening Pavitra
opted Sicilian defense. In the 14th move Vanessa created a weakness by
forcing Pavitra to move her kingside pawn, played aggressively and on 35th
move Pavitra surrendered her king,
