Karnataka to receive Rs 700-cr to check sea erosion

08.06.10 Udupi : In order to control the problem of sea erosion permanently from Ullal to Karwar, the amount of Rs 700-crore’s action plan will be prepared, said Minister for Ports and Ecology Krishna Palemar.

Speaking at the press meet on June 7, Monday he said that plan will be jointly implemented by the State and Union governments.

Around 70 per cent loan for the plan will be provided by the Asian Development Bank, while the remaining balance will be fulfilled by the government.

The construction of retaining walls for 300 km coastal line has been surveyed by the authorities. The amount Rs 216 crore has been released to Ullal and Rs 14 crore to Mangalore out of the total amount of  Rs 264-crore released for the first phase of the plan, he said.

Similarly, project of worth Rs 2,400 crore has been prepared in Goa, Karnataka and Kerala to check sea erosion.

Government will release the amount of Rs 700 crore for Karnataka in the first phase. The project will started as soon after inviting tenders.
