09.06.10 Mangalore : The Institution of Engineers, Mangalore chapter and
Institution of Valuers, Mangalore Branch jointly organised the World
Environment Day celebrations on the theme, “Many species, One Planet and one
Future” on Tuesday at 6 Pm at the Hotel Woodlands, in the Mangalore.

Speaking on the occasion, Jayaprakash S. Nayak, scientific officer,
Karnataka state pollution control Board in Mangalore, as the chief Guest,
referred to the various kinds of pollution in the air, in sea waters, on the
earth surface which spoil limited drinking water available to humanity and
power production capacities. He dwelt on the Mexican underground oil well
spill that brought misery to birds like pelicans and coloured red cranes in
the sea waters due to oil pollution. Over - Industrialization at the cost of
greenery, plant life and clean atmosphere had reduced animal life all over
the world, and certain species of wild animals, birds, and fish were getting
extinct. Already there is a shortage of fish and other food products
available to Man in the seas, in view of excessive catch, hunting and
shooting by various nations in and around the forests, in the skies, and
seas / rivers they possessed. Unless there is a clean environment, Nature
will not protect Man for future generations in a little globe we have now
full of diverse communication materials and technical implements, Nayak
stated. He told the audience that there is no planet like Earth in the
universe, such a diversity of living species and their future (including
human beings) is inter connected and one of its kind.

Engineer J. Mascarenhas, Chairman, IE/MLC presided. He cautioned people
against testing Nature too hard in mining, oil wells and by devastating
forests only to harm plant / animal life as on Western Ghats.
Er. T. Ramachandra Bhat welcomed the distinguished gathering, Er. Umesh Bhat
(Secretary, IE/MLC) compered the programme, while Er. S. Prasad (secy., IOV)
