'Ban Sri Rama Sene if necessary': RSS

10-02-09 The
RSS on Monday demanded action against
Ram Sene, whose
acts of moral policing in Mangalore evoked nationwide offenses. The Sangh, which
rejected allegation that the Sena was linked to it, said the government should
ban the outfit if it was found necessary. Meanwhile, in Kollam, Union home
minister P Chidambaram termed the Sene as a “threat” to the country. He also
said the Centre was watching its activities and expected the Karnataka
government to take firm action against the outfit. The RSS statement against the
Sene comes in the backdrop of sharp attack from its rivals for patronising
organisations such as Sena. “We have no links with the Sene,” said the RSS. “The
RSS considers attacks on humans as heinous crime. We do not have any objection,
if the government decides to ban Ram Sene,” reports quoting RSS south-central
zonal secretary K Narahari said. The Sene activists had barged into a pub in
Mangalore on January 24, beat up girls and others, triggering a nationwide
outrage against the outfit. “It is incorrect to link the policies and activities
of Sri Ram Sene to the Sangh Parivar,” Narahari and B Nagaraj, a pracharak of
RSS south-central zone said. Reiterating his outfit’s opposition to pub culture
or Valentine’s Day celebrations, Mr Narahari, however, said: “The RSS does not
approve any violent activity in relation to incidents like Mangalore pub attack,
episode involving abduction of the CPM MLA’s daughter or the February 14
Valentine’s Day protests. Instead, RSS welcomes healthy debate and public
awareness programmes on these social related issues.”
Addressing a gathering in Kollam, the home minister
said, “Ram Sene is a threat to the country. The Centre is watching its
activities with great concern.” Condemning the activities of the outfit, he said
“No organisation can become a self-styled police force. That cannot be allowed.
Sene had already crossed limits. They cannot say what one should wear, one
should eat or to where one should go,” he said. Asked if the Centre could impose
ban on the outfit, he said: “Let’s see what Karnataka government is doing. We
expect chief minister Yeddiyurappa to take firm action against them as
promised,” he said.
