199 GPs face new elections in D.K. dt. on Wednesday (May 12)

11.05.10 Mangalore : The second phase of GP rural elections is due to take place tomorrow, May 12, when Karkala in Udupi district goes to polls, and 199 GPs face voting in Dakshina Kannada district with 7500 candidates in the boxing ring. The voting is done between 7A.M and 5 P.M. Already, 12 candidates have been elected as unopposed in this region, with 6 in Sajipa Mannoor Bala 2, Sullia Taluk Kalmady 3, and Nelyur 1 returning them without election contests.

4493 male and 3007 women candidates make up the fighting lot, of which SC-639, ST 421, BCs-A group 1924, BCs-B group 484 and common group 4032 candidates remain in the field. There are 1103 pool booths in all and in each at least 4 election staff and one armed constable will be present. 192 Buses, 92 Vans, 223 Jeeps and other vehicles are serving the election workers in their to and fro movements on May 12 which is a holiday for factories /offices.

In Mangalore Taluk, out of 49 GPs 309 booths are working, and 2 are not, according to local supervisors. 2306 candidates are in the contest here, with around 2000 policemen (and women) on duty, guarding the booths, he added.
