Fishing boat capsizes near Bengre

13.04.10 Mangalore : A fishing boat capsized near Bengre on April 13, Tuesday letting loose a series of problems.

Ashok Kumar is the owner of “Shri Malaraya Kripa,” the fishing boat that left Old Mangalore at around 12:30 a.m. with a crew of seven headed by Captain Sendhur. They set off in a north direction; and after some time, the engine failed. The crew tried to anchor the boat to prevent it from being drifted away by the wind and the waves, but they could not anchor the boat properly.

The captain called the owner, who with a Gillnet boat and another boat called Sammilana went to the rescue of the stranded boat. They tried to pull the boat into the deep sea as it was getting caught in the shallow waters, but could not do so. The boat is now tumbled onto the shore and people are still trying to set it right.

In case of complete damage, the owner will have to bear a loss of Rs 30 lakh. The boat is insured, but the owner can claim only an insurance of Rs 20 lakh. Moreover, if the boat is damaged, the crew cannot resume fishing activities for another year because they will have to cancel the current ownership of the boat and apply for a new ownership.
