Stones pelted at church

13.05.10 Udupi : At attack on a Christian Church on the NH 17 in Honnavar was discovered early this morning, when some devout people gathered at the roadside holy place, giving rise to the suspicion that the mischievous act was conducted on the previous might by hooligans.

Stones had been pelted on the glass covers of the idols of St. Mary and St. Joseph, and they were broken up.

The Holy Cross church is so popular that even non-Christians visit it on occasions, say the local residents. The church is just opposite a police station in Honnavar and yet miscreants have gone berserk. CIP M Jagadish and PSI G.T. Dasari inspected the damage on receiving a complaint. Acting DC of NK district, Dr. K.M. Narasimha Murthy and Dy. S.P. Dr. Vedamurthy also came to the church to assure the aggrieved persons in prayer that the culprits will be arrested soon. The situation being tense, security was provided to the church and neighbourhood. In view of GP elections, police were away and the offenders had taken undue advantage, Dy. S.P stated.
