Meet on Cultural Challenges held Kannada Sahitya Sammelan


 

16.03.10 : When the use of LGP and electricity was introduced in the houses, none of them thought it will be a challenge confronting the culture, said Dr B Shivarama Shetty, delivering the lecture on ‘Developmental Activities and Cultural Establishment’, at the 16th DK District Kannada Sahitya Sammelan held at Town Hall on March 16, Tuesday.

Though modernity has influenced over a large number of people, the belief in mythological character like Parashurama is still present in the mind of people as the ‘creator of Dakshina Kannada’ and no one can change it.

While Dr Mahalinga Bhat, in his lecture on the topic ‘Situation of Art Exhibition’, said that today the rituals such as Bhootha Kola, Tayyam and aati kalanje has changed as an exhibition art which will be performed in the stage.

Though westernization has strongly influenced over the youths, but still students in schools and college prefer performing the mythological dramas and worship of spirits.

The street plays today have just remained as matter of assignment for the students of social work and not mere interest, he added.

Prabhakar Joshi, art critic, said that culture is how one desires to live. The art is saved through respect.

He also said that, it is not the right time to argue whether globalization is good or bad but it must be negotiated.

‘Dashavathara’ is the old name for Yakshagana. The children who participate in television shows is considered as talent, but a child performing Yakshagana in various episodes is considered as child labour, according to the society.

The Well-known cartoonist, Prakash Shetty, held the audience spellbound and made them to enjoy the fun, by drawing fun lines of several people was the main attraction at the sammelan.
