S.M. Krishna, External Affairs minister.

The cap or the crown of a Foreign minister of India sits uneasily on the head of
former CM of Karnataka, Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna (Gowda), 78, even after 2
years in office. As he was fumbling and learning the ropes and tricks of
diplomacy, surrounded by enemies in SAARC region around India, and with no
definite foreign policy under his belt, he had to be set aside by Foreign (Dept)
secretaries like Siva Shankar Menon (who is now National Security Adviser) and
Ms Nirupama Rao (wife of former chief secretary of Karnataka) for an year.
Krishna refused to speak to Pakistan, visited Australia and China, but still
uncomfortable in his high seat. Shashi Tharoor created several pin-pricks for
him as his deputy, until he was thrown out in IPL-Cochi funding scan with a NRI
female. He will go to Pakistan on July 15, but not before the two foreign
secretaries have drawn up the agenda for talks. SMK did not do much in Bhutan in
SAARC regional summit attended by Indian PM. One wonders if Krishna is getting
too old to impress.
