Rural Panchayat Elections: Nominations in fast flow

22.04.10 Mangalore : About 140 persons field their nomination forms on Wednesday once the process of holding Gram Panchayat elections started with an announcement from the state government.

Mangalore Taluk has 49 GPs and 17 nominations were filed on the first day. People will elect a total of 938 GP members this year, including 407 women.

In Sullia Taluk, where 320 GP members have to be elected in all, 28 nominations have been filed.

In Belthangady, 84 nominations came, whereas 583 candidates (including 268 women) are to be chosen in due course.

In Bantwal taluk, only 5 persons were in the ring so far, but 804 members have to be voted in with 387 seats reserved for women there in.

In Puttur Taluk, just 3 women have filed their nominations on the first day. There are 563 seats to be filled in, with 249 women among them.

Arambody and Venoor GPs have not finished their terms, so no elections there.

Candidates can file nominations upto 28th April and withdrawals, if any, are allowed till May 3rd, 2010.

In Udupi district, 219 nominations were made today, with Kundapur Taluk moving in. In other 2 taluks of the district, nominations began arriving on April 19th and there were 49 so far in those areas (total 268).
