Air India Express coming to Mangalore crashes at Bajpe airport (Kenjaru).

Only 9 survivors out of a list of 169, including 6 crew members:

22.05.10 Mangalore : An Air India Express Plane coming from Dubai to mangalore crashed at the Bajpe airport while landing this morning at 6.30 Am. Only 9 passengers managed to survive with a child thrown out of the breaking up plane, and Farook jumping out included. All others died, many of hem charred in a fire that enveloped the plane.

This is the third biggest of all air tragedies that have taken place in the last 14 years. The accident is largely attributed to the European pilot who ignored local instructions while alighting and over-ran the runway.

Union Civil Aviation minister Praful Patel came from Delhi in the morning to Mangalore to guife the post accident activities. Subsequently, External Affairs minister SM.Krishna arrived by a helicopter from Bangalore and visited the hospitals to see the injured persons and to console bereaved families. Later union Law minister M. Veerappa Moily issued a condolence message from Delhi and left for Mangalore where he plans to spend 2 days visiting hospitals CM. B.S. Yeddyurappa is also now in Mangalore. Other local ministers, MPs and MLAs are in Bajpe to extend their sympathy.

Praful Patel declared a compensation of Rs.75 crores in all to the families of the 160 dead, of whom 60 were from Kerala, 14 (Udupi) and the others from DK, Shimoga and other districts of Karnataka.

The state is observing a day’s sorrow in public CM has announced Rs 2 Lakhs each to the bereaved families, in Mangalore.

The 9 injured survivors are being treated I AJ, SCS , KMC and Unity hospitals, using 25 ambulances carrying injured, and the 160 dead bodies taken to Wenlock Hospital. Kerala has declared 2 days of sorrow in the state for its 60 dead. The state (Karnataka) has announced Rs. 50,000/- each to the injured families of 9 being treated in City Hospitals.

139 dead bodies were recovered from the accident site and taken to the morgue.

5 persons who had booked their seats in Dubai on the fateful plane, escaped death as they cancelled their reservation at the last minute. A family of 6 died in the crash. 2 children who were in their plane to attend their mother’s last rites lost their lives.
