Praful Patel on air crash (May 22)
22.05.10 Mangalore : The new airport built in Kenjaru close to Bajpe airport
has become a talk of the Town, all over the world on Saturday by noon, after
an Air India Express plane crashed on landing and went up in fire, broke
into 2 pieces, killing most of the 169 passengers on it, coming from Dubai
to Mangalore route. The plane went beyond the runway in a murky atmosphere
of rain and clouds at 6.30 Am (Morning).
Praful Patel, Civil Aviation minister in Delhi rushed to Mangalore from New
Delhi to supervise the subsequent activities. Later talking to pressmen, he
stated that all functions at the airport were found normal, but for
“touchdown and landing” today, when a tyre broke and plane was on fire with
thick smoke around. He assured all possible aid to the bereaved families of
160 dead in the accident. A detailed official. Enquiry will take place, he
announced. He admitted that there was a ”limited spill-over area” in the
airport after the short runway. All airport safety norms were in order, he
added.
