Revenue collection fallen short of target

25-02-09 The revenue collection by Mangalore Central Excise Commissionerate, comprising Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada Districts, has fallen short of the fixed target. The Commissionerate till January 31, collected excise duty to the tune of Rs 3897.20 crore and Service Tax of Rs 204.83 crore as against the target of Rs 4230.66 crore and Rs 216 crore, respectively. Talking to newspersons here today on the occasion of Central Excise day, Commissioner M Ajit Kumar said the total excise revenue targetted for the year was Rs 5,375 crore. However, the collection till January end was less by 4.93 per cent at Rs 202.17 crore and Service Tax collection by 5.37 per cent, compared to the corresponding period last year. He said reduction in the volume of take off of petroleum products to the domestic market and reduction in the excise duty were the main factors for the reduction in the excise revenue collection. Mr Kumar said there was reduction in excise duty collection by Rs 150 crore by one of the three major excise revenue yielding MRPL where the excise collection was Rs 3735.66 crore and there was deep decrease in the excise revenue collection by West Coast Paper Mill from where the department could collect only Rs 0.66 crore as against the collection of Rs 20 crore which was caused due to the company's expansion activity. The collection from another major company- KIOCL was only 0.31 crore due to prolonged shut down of its activities, he said. In the service tax sector, he said Public Sector Syndicate Bank had paid Rs 38.90 crore (31 per cent above last year), followed by Rs 35.30 crore by Corporation Bank (59 per more than last year) and New Mangalore Port Trust 25.76 crore (27 per cent more than last year).
