26.05.10 :
The enhancement of sentence from 6 months of R.I. for harassing and ending
the life of a former Tennis player Ruchika Girhotra by Haryana DGP, S.P.S.
Rathore who is convicted of several offences, to 18 months, has been
welcomed by the bereaved family as an act of justice. Rathore was punished
lightly for sexual harassment of a teen girl and there was a public outcry
on the sentence of just 6 mpnths of rigorous imprisonment (R.I.).
After an order from the Supreme Court, the District and sessions court judge
Gurbir Singh cancelled the higher appeal and raised the sentence to 18
months R.I. against the culprit Rathore who had appealed to Chandigarh
district court. The offence committed by Rathore against Ruchika as the
Tennis Association boss dates back to Aug. 1990. Ruchika’s family was afraid
of Rathore when he was in power as DGP, but made a complaint after his
retirement.
