Wall collapsed near Belthangady, 5 died several injured

 

"Huge crowd around the wall collapse in Belthangady"

 

27-02-09 A newly constructed wall collapsed at Thurkalike near Tannirpantha in Belthangady taluk on February 26, 2009 in the late evening. According to the police and the fire department sources the wall had collapsed after a rush of loose soil had impacted the freshly built wall. The 15 feet wall had no support and was loosely built. The Mosque had organized a religious function which was scheduled to go late into the night. The devotees of the Mosque had started arriving at the venue of the programme and some of them had taken their seats on the other side of the wall. Due to this the wall collapsed on the people sitting nearby killing them instantaneously while it injured others who were sitting little away. The three dead are identified as Rafiq from Moodbidri, Puttumonu from Puttur and Ahmed from Kalenjibail near Belthangady.  Among the other two dead are children aged around 10 years, who have been not yet identified. After the collapse, the local people helped to take the injured to the nearby hospitals. Two children and Ahmed died on the spot while Mohammad Rafi was brought dead to a hospital  in Puttur. Three of the injured have been admitted in private hospitals in Mangalore while three others have been taken to Puttur and Belthangady hospitals, two of them have been discharged after treatment at a private hospital in Belthangady.
