Stany and Nihal Manjunath are in joint lead
27.04.10 Mangalore : Karnataka State Open FIDE Rated Chess Championship 2010
is proceeding on expected lines. On the third day at the end of 5th round
Defending Champion Stany G A and Nihal Manjunath are in joint lead. Both
will play against each other in the sixth round to lead the race.
In the fifth round Top board played between Niranjan Navalgund of Belgaum
and Defending Champion Stany G A of Shimoga. Niranjans Queens pawn opening,
Stany opted irregular line by playing b6 pawn. In the eighteenth move
Niranjan blundered his knight. Defending Champion forced Niranjan to resign
the game in 32nd move. On the second board Nihal Manjunath of Mangalore
convincingly outplayed the World Under 10 Champion Girish A Kaushik of
Mysore and joined the top slot along with Stany.
Third board played between Yashas D of Shimoga and a veteran player
Gopalkrishna P of Sulia, Mangalore. Playing from the black side,
Gopalkrishna opted unpopular Modern defense. In 20th move Yashas managed to
gain a pawn and then by combination play got strong hold on the game. In
40th move move Gopalkrishna surrendered his king to Yashas.
On the fourth board Kishan Gangolli of Shimoga played with white pieces
opted London System of play against Gahan M G of Mangalore. The game was
almost equal up to 37th move. A combination played by Gahan ultimately
fetched him a victory at 42nd move.
Suraj M of Bangalore and Shreeshan S of Shimoga played on the fifth board.
Plying from black side, Shreeshan opted Petroff Defense. Shreeshan blundered
a pawn in the early game, Suraj managed this advantage and slowly won the
game in 45th move.
