Stany and Girish A Koushik are in joint lead

28.04.10 Mangalore : Karnataka State Open FIDE Rated Chess Championship 2010 is nearing to declare the Champion. On the fourth day at the end of 8th round Stany GA and Girish A Koushik are in joint lead with 7 point. Final round of the Championship is scheduled to be held at 9:00 am followed by the Prize distribution ceremony  at 3:00 pm on 29.04.2010.

In the seventh round, Top board played between Yashas D of Shimoga and Defending Champion Stany GA of Shimoga.  Stany opted Carokann defense, in the eighth move Yashas Sacrificed his Knight to get positional advantage. Playing a combination he regained the piece and enjoyed with  two pawns. In the 31st move Stany  surrendered his king to Yashas.

Former National A Player, Aravind Shasty of Bangalore played Queens pawn opening with Karnataka State Under 15 Champion, Niranjan Navalgund of Belgaum. Niranjan opted Grunfield   defense. But experienced Shasty converted it to miscellaneous line. In the seventh move, Niranjan captured a pawn which helped Shastry to attack aggressively and forced Niranjan to resign the game at 27th move.

Former State Champion Vijendra Y G of Mysore played against World Under 10 Champion  Girish A Koushik of Mysore.  Vijendra played Grunfield fianchetto opening, the complicated game continued till the end of the middle game. Vijendra offered draw at 38th move, but Girish rejected the offer and the vigorous game ended in favour of Girish  at 47th move.

In the Eighth and penultimate round, playing from the black side, Arvind Shastry opted Carokann defense, Stany continued the game in advance variation. Shastry gave a pawn sacrificed in the opening and hurried to gain the it back, which turned in to be developmental advantage to Stany. Shastry lost the game in 30 moves.

In the second board Girish A Kaushik, with white pieces played Trompowsky variation with Yashas D.  Yashas deviated from the line early in the opening and made inferior 13th move, which gave Girish an attack. Girish forced a checkmate threat and Yashas resigned after 38 moves.
