KMC observes ‘World No Tobacco Day’

31.05.10 Mangalore : The Department of Community Medicine in association with Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore organized ‘World No Tobacco Day’ at Urban Health Centre at Ladyhill on May 31, Monday.

Chief guest Mayor Rajani Dugganna inaugurated the event and released the Media Kit. Dr M V Prabhu, associate dean, KMC presided over the function. Dr Christopher Sudhakar, Dean Manipal College of Nursing, Mangalore addressed the gathering.

Dr K Nagaraj, Prof and Head, Department of Community Medicine, KMC, Mangalore welcomed the gathering and delivered the importance of World No Tobacco Day. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the Government of India and Quit Tobacco India will organize a project ‘Tobacco –free Households Initiative’ to save women and children from adverse health effects of second- hand smoke.

He also said that, the project will initiate in Boloor area, involving medical students and doctors of KMC, Mangalore, to create a network of researchers on tobacco related issues and increasing public awareness on the benefits of tobacco cessation.

Through this project, the co-ordinators will visit individual houses and create awareness among smoking men and aim to achieve ‘Smoke free Household’.

Dr Prasanna Mithra P delivered the lecture on ‘Tobacco Use Current Scenario’ and Mrs Hyacintha Pinto on ‘Link de-addiction Centre- Women and Tobacco’.
