Mangalore : Vishnu Kamath Shevgoor popularly known as ‘Children’s teacher’ was born on June 16, 1951 to a Mangalore’s first commercial designer L Laxman Kamath Shevgoor and Laxmi Bai Shevgoor. Shevgoor who hails from Urwa, started his career as an art teacher in the year 1967 in the name of Shevgoor Fine Arts in Carstreet after completing his 11th class in Canara High School Main and continued till 1972. Later for 29 years he worked as hand made commercial designer for almost all the press, after the death of his father and by self practice. On March 18, 2001, he closed it completely and again started teaching art at Om Chambers. He started his art class with one room and single student and improvement took place to four rooms and 100 students per day and altogether 220 students’ including vacation batches. His wife Bharathi Shevgoor and son Manjunath Shevgoor support him in his every interest. He has not shown any interest in participating for the art competition but just draw for his self satisfaction. His interest in music helped him to receive three prizes in his school days. Shevgoor has designed 15 drawing books for his students titled ‘Relax’, which teaches them every step of art and not sold in market. He teaches from basic to colour pencil, pencil shading, sketching, dot work, wash work, dual tone pictures, water colour and oil painting. He trains students to appear for the ‘Grade exam’ being conducted by government and around 42 students have appeared and passed out in first class and distinction.

Suresh Manglooru

Mangaluru artiste shines in Bengaluru
The famous Mangalorean cine star Suresh Manglooru, was born on 14 March 1953 at Attavar. He who was appointed as the senior supervisor at the BSNL Company from 1973 to 2003 had shown interest towards acting. During the course of his profession, he acted in several dramas organized at the BSNL Club day. Suresh who was interested in acting showed his talent from the class fifth. He further joined the theatre along with K N Taylor. The drama ‘Yerenla Namborchi’ with Machendranath Pandeshwar gained him popularity in the field of theatre. Later he worked with other tulu directors like Devdas Kapikad, Vijay Kumar Kodialbail and Naveen D Padil.
His first step towards the small screen was in the tele soap ‘Sumathi’ directed by S Narayan and was telecasted in Udaya TV. While his role as the politician in ‘Preethi Illada Mele’. His other serials are ‘Eshwari’, ‘Agnishike’, ‘Ella Maerthiruvaga’, Hase Mane’and now working on Venu Bolanje’s ‘Jogula’ and ‘Arundathi’.
When it comes to big screen he is also not the junior most but performed the small role as a lawyer in the sandalwood film ‘Prema Jyothi’ in 1982. Later his roles in ‘Mathad Mathad Mallige’, Taj Mahal’, ‘Milana’, Janumadha Gelathi’, ‘Vamshi’ and recently in ‘Maleyalli Jotheyalli’ was like and praised by the audience. He has received the ‘Aryabhata Cultural Organization Award’ in the year 2007 as a best villain character for the serial ‘Preethi Illadha Mele’. Apart from the field of acting, he had also devoted his leisure for music, sports and reading and walking in the morning and evening. He was also district level carom champion for more than ten years.

Bangalore: The President of 77th Kannada Literacy Assembly now in Bangalore is a 98 year old, short, smiling man called G.Venkatasubbaiah, a lexicographer, also known as ‘Jeevy’ by his friends and fellow journalists.
Jeevi (GV) wrote many books but they were not novels, but only dictionaries. Only an expert in a language can produce such dictionaries. Dr. Samuel Johnson was a lexicographer, Dr. Shivarama Karanth also had hand in it. Many writers go through dictionaries before they write novels, stories, poems and other books in a language, to know more words and still more meanings. Kannada is a rich language.
Jeevi (GV) is old by age, but young at heart. His sharp criticism of corrupt politicians when they were present on the dais or in the front rows on Friday when the 77th Sammelan was opened to hear him, did not make any rattling noises, as it was perhaps read out amidst noises of hungry delegates and visitors dry of throats, for the sake of water and tasty meals.
GV wanted Kannada everywhere in the state of Karnataka, but those who attended the Literacy Congress in their thousands demanded food and water banging on empty metal plates. Buddha was vindicated. In Mangalore during 66th Conference of the KSP, “The Hindu” English news copies were burnt, to emphasise the importance of Kannada dailies in a Kannada annual meet. But in several annual conferences after that, in Kanakapura, Udupi, Tumkur and other places, no loud noises or protests were heard about food and water, as in Bangalore only yesterday.
It is a shame on organizers that they collected huge sums of money in crores from the state govt, through the Reception Committee Chairman and Home Minister R. Ashoka, but did not provide meals and water to say, 20,000 excess visitors to the capital show. How can they hold a World Kannada Conference in a smaller city like Belgaum on the border and whom they will feed? Will hungry stomachs listen to sermons in Kannada, on the importance of Kannada language in a Kannada Nadu? Jeevi must have felt remorseful for his blistering attacks on rulers. Was he not hungry?

Tulunad’s Composer

Mangalore : Manikanth Kadri, whose first steps in the field of music were guided by his father Padma Shree Kadri Gopalnath, the internationally acclaimed saxophone player, is now famous in his own rights as a composer of film music.
Born in Mangalore on May 28, 1978, Manikanth studied in St. Lawrence Higher Secondary School in Bondel, passed PUC in St. Aloysius College, and obtained a degree in Gokarnanatheshwara College.
He has composed over 500 jingles for radio and television and has worked on 10 devotional albums. The music he composed for his first Malayalam telefilm “Annum Mazhayayirunnu” won the Kerala State Television Award 2005 for the best music. The same telefilm, which was shown on Amrita TV, won six more awards.
Manikanth, who currently resides in Chennai, learned saxophone and clarinet, but later was attracted toward jazz and fusion music. He also did the background music for an English feature film called “Tantric Journal” for 3-D Max Media, a company which is based in Florida. This film was shown in more than 8 international festivals, including those at Hawaii and San Francisco.
His second movie was the Malayalam art movie “Chandranilekkoru Vazhi.” Manikanth has also worked on Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, and Kannada movies. Recently, he composed music for the Tulu movie “Devu Poonje” starring Pooja Gandhi and based on the history of Tulunad. He has composed music for more than 25 films, his most recent compositions being for the Kannada films “Malebillu” and “Swayamvara.”

Mangalore City BJP MLA, N. YOGISH BHAT, now Deputy Speaker, elected unopposed

Mangalore : It could be a sympathy Vote, may be friendly feeling, that gave N. Yogish Bhat, four times MLA of Mangalore and never a minister, unopposed support from all parties in the Karnataka legislature on Monday to take the high seat as Deputy speaker vacated by K.G Bopiah, next – door Kodagu MLA elevated as the speaker much earlier. The post of Deputy Speaker came unasked to an experienced legislative person like Bhat who actually wanted to be a minister all these years. He resigned as KSIIDC chairman on Tuesday to adorn the seat of Deputy Speaker with acclaim from Opposition benches who knew him well. Only those get elected as Speakers who are known well among all parts of legislature.
What is so special about him ? He has worked in several legislative welfare committees for the down-trodden as a member, also in city improvement, rural development, sports and games, Tourism, Kannada and culture, even public accounts committee in one capacity or the other. This rich experience had made him many friends in the Vidhana Soudha and Council sectors.
Bhat belongs to Nandavara in Bantwal Taluk near Panemangalore. He was active in Social work and Industrial investments matters. Soft-spoken, with an attractive personality, Yogish Bhat won many hearts. He is an undefeated captain in BJP circles.

Mangalore : Prajwal alias Kartik Shetty, son of Vijay Shetty, who basically hails from Nakre – Kedike, Karkala of Dakshina Kannada is a name in Sandalwood film industry. He was born on 4th July 1987 and was brought up in Mumbai. He has done his BA from Jaihind College, Mumbai. He has a passion of horse riding and later changes his hobby and became a professional trained horse rider and horse trainer.
Karthik started his career as a theater actor at an age of 8. As a child artist he has acted in many Tulu and Hindi plays under the banner of Chandra Prakash Theatre, Mumbai. He is a recipient of Tulu Sahithya Academy appreciation award as a child theatre artist.
Before joining the film industry as an actor, Karthik got himself trained in all the essential aspects such as dance, fights and acting under the various masters of Bollywood. He has also pursued courses in script writing and direction. He is also a distant relative of Kannada music director Gurukiran.
Karthik played his debut in Kannada film ‘Yuva’ opposite Telugu actor Madhu Sharma in the female lead. He is master in film making from digital academy Mumbai and assisted renowned film
director Mahesh Manjrekar for 3 years. Karthik is black belt in marshal art and even trained in mix marshal art in Singapore.
Now his next movie ‘Karthik’ directed by Sathish Shetty of Mangalore is soon to be released at all theatres in the second week of January which is an action movie with a romantic twist.

Badminton: Saina Nehwal Wins Gold to be World No.1
Having won 3 open Badminton Tournaments in Delhi, Malaysia and Indonesia in a row, this year the Hyderabad girl Saina (20) had risen to world no.2 position, relegating many a Chinese women star. She brought a last minute Gold medal to India, beating a Malaysian champion in a nail-biting finish, to warm the hearts of her Indian admirers and national coach, Pullela Gopichand in the Commonwealth Games.
Then she fell in China at the 16th Asian Games held in Guang Zhou at the quarter finals stage, darkening the moods of badminton enthusiasts and slipping to world no.4 rank, with 3 Chinese girls on top.
Of course, she had beaten the Malaysian in a revenge match, but could not go beyond last eight, with Taipeh and main land Chinese girls. Yet she did not lose her heart, when she did not get a medal in China.
She went to Hong Kong and the Chinese girls followed her there to play in HongKong Super Series 2010 tournament.
On Saturday (Dec 11), Saina Nehwal defeated a German player Juliana Schenk in a match that extended to 3 games (losing the second one), in 33 minutes. In the other court at HongKong, two Chinese players fought each other and Sixian Wong beat the best ranked Xin Wang, in two straight games / sets.
Saina Nehwal went on to win the Hong Kong open tussle in finals (her fourth Super series 2010 title) against Sixian Wang of China in 3 sets, by 15-21, 21-16 and 21-17 on last Sunday (12-12-10).
It was a pulsating and edge of the seat match running for 71 minutes. If only the Asiad had taken place after the HongKong title clash, Saina would have at least reached the final there.
But the failure in China made her a bolder player, with clenched teeth and determination to succeed. She had time to practice and worked hard, to overcome her weaknesses. She actually lost a game right in the beginning, but took the next two, to clinch the series on a golden heart warming note.
She was expected to be ranked world no.1 if she only won HongKong open series, Jai Ho! She has done it now.
Saina has reached home (in Hyderabad) today

Juhi Chawla – Mehta

Kukke Subrahmanya: Ten years ago, she came with a new husband Jai Mehta, industrialist, to Kukke Subrahmanya to make a vow for children.
On Dec.4, a nature-looking mother Juhi Chawla Mehta came with her husband of a decade and 2 children, Jahnavi and Arjun to fulfil the 10 year old vow to the Snake God here.
Her spiritual master, V.S Nayak, guided the film stars family for prayers and vows, staying at the temple for 2 days.
The family came from Mumbai to Mangalore by aircraft and motored to the holy shrine. She stayed in Sheshnag guesthouse, where cricketer S. Tendulkar earlier had stayed. She fasted in the morning, performed the Tulabaharam (offerings by weighing balance) of her 2 kids and remained to watch the night’s cart festival on Sunday (Dec.5)
Juhi is from Ludhiana in Punjab, but studied in Mumbai city. She was sighted as Miss Femina India. She entered films in ‘Qayamat se with Amirkhan. She has done several hit films, like Om Shanti Om. She acted with V. Ravichandran in ‘Prema Loka’ a super hit in Kannada. She had a role in ‘Kindari Jogi’ (Kannada) and some Tamil films.
10 years ago she had Masala Dosa for morning tiffin, but on Saturday, she took Idliwada, according to known sources.
She made name with Shah Rukh Khan in a Yash Chopra production where the Khan had a vicious role and quick talk. She has a business partnership with him now.
Her husband Jai Mehta remained in the background, as usual. Juhi loves family life and occasionally appears in a film these days so as care for her 2 children.

Julio Ribeiro – the Super cop

Heard of KPS Gill? He was the first Super – cop. Ribeiro is the next one.
Born in 1929 in Mumbai, Julio F. Rebeiro, has degrees in Commerce and Law from Bombay University. He joined IPS in 1953 when he was barely 24. In 1982 he became Commissioner of Mumbai Police and stayed there till 1985. Subsequently, he was DG – CRF, DGP – Gujerat, Special Secretary in India’s Home Ministry, DGP – Punjab and finally, Adviser to Punjab governor, in quick succession. He was awarded the rank of Padma Bhushan in 1987.
Retiring from service, he became the Indian Ambassador to Romania, an East European Republic for 4 years serving upto 1993.
Ribeiro declined a gubernatorial post in Jammu – Kashmir state, in view of commitments in social work in 1994, when PM AB Vajpayee had called him. He served as Director in 2 private business companies.
He is currently fighting corruption in India through a trust. He has upheld communal harmony. He is involved in various Charitable institutions, as an upright Police officer in retirement. He is a columnist in newspapers and has authored a book on crimes, “Bullet for Bullet” based on his experience as a super-cop. He is married to Ms Melba and has 2 daughters.
He was recently honoured by BASF India Ltd, as Icon of “good governance” in Mangalore this week.

New Delhi: Maharashtra CM Ashok Chavan and IOA Committee chairman and MP, Suresh Kalmadi have tendered their resignations to their high posts in the grim shadow of Adarsh Housing skyscraper scandal in Colaba (Mumbai) and Commonwealth Games stadia building lavish scandals of money grabbing and corruption deals.
Both have denied their roles in the Mumbai and Delhi scandals till today. It was Kalmadi who had publicly told that sports activities in India should be run by politicians and officers unconnected with such sports, and has been there in a high post for long years, and now stands condemned and criticised. Chavan has accused the former (twice) CM of Maharashtra and present Union Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, of starting the Adarsh Housing construction for war widows and those martyred in Kashmir and in wars with Pakistan.
The scandal of seeking flats in the skyscraper embraces Army, Navy and Air chiefs and retired Defense officers, now coming under the gaze of CBI, as ordered by the upright Defense Minister, A.K Antony. There is turmoil in the Defense personnel, both retired and active in service, on the investigation into Adarsh (model) Housing deals by Central Bureau of Investigation to fix the responsibility and punishment for criminal activities. While Chavan goes out under a label of inexperience. Kalmadi is weeded out for his audacious skills of committing economic frauds on Indian people.
