Ruling out censorship or blocking of any website, including those facilitating social networking like Facebook, Pilot said the government would not come in the way of freedom of speech, be it positive or negative, but whatever content they host should not hurt feelings or sentiments of anyone.

“Our concern is only with objectionable content. There is no place for things that would offend anyone or cause social disharmony. Laws have been made to protect the fundamental rights of the people and they are applicable to all,” Pilot said after inaugurating the seventh edition of the Indian Semiconductors Association (ISA) summit.

Pilot’s remarks came in the light of a Delhi court Monday directing Facebook, Yahoo, Google and other 19 websites to file written statements on removing objectionable content from their sites.

Clarifying that cyber laws governing websites and the internet traffic were made in consultation with all stakeholders, including those providing social media and other web services, the minister said firms offering the service should have a self-regulated mechanism to redress grievances of individuals or groups of people whose feelings get hurt by objectionable or offensive content.

“There is no government stand separate from what the laws are. We just want them to operate in conformity with the laws that have to be followed by everyone. The internet traffic is growing exponentially as the number of users has already crossed 100 million,” Pilot observed.

Judge N K Sudhindra Rao directed the SP Lokayukta to submit his report by March 12.

B Eranna, a Pre-University lecturer in Siruguppa, who filed the complaint, submitted that Somalingappa was first elected to the Karnataka Assembly in 2004 and re-elected in 2008 from Siruguppa segment in Bellary district.

 
Somalingappa while filing his nomination papers and declarations made before the Karnataka Lokayukta, right from 2004-05 upto March 31, 2011, had declared income of Rs 13,40,000 against the assets acquired by him and his family to the tune of Rs 76,99,333.

This excluded the cost and value of certain assets like a property in Siruguppa, declared value of which is Rs 9 lakh against the actual value of Rs 45 lakh, he had said.

The disproportionate income of Rs 63,59,333 was not accounted for, he submitted.

Somalingappa is the second BJP MLA to face allegations of disproportionate assets after S R Vishwanath. Congress MLA Krishnappa is also facing a similar complaint.

Soolibele said that at present youths are following the western culture, but Swami Vivekananda was one who discovered soul of America to them. He never thought for himself but always thought and worked for his country, hence the youth of every generation remember his birth anniversary more than their family. Recently a newspaper wrote an article on Swami Vivekananda and mentioned that he was tedious, but actually the one who wrote the article is tedious since he will not have even some percent of his intelligence.

Peace is not found in rich man’s bedroom but it is present in a poor man’s hut. When the poor are developed, the country will be developed, he said. When Swami Vivekananda went to America, our country was listed in downtrodden and slavery based countries, but now it is been listed in technology, medicine, education and others, he said.

He also said that if one observes the eyes of Swami Vivekananda for two minutes, in six months there will be drastic changes in one. Youths must switch on their mind set to inculcate the qualities of Swami Vivekananda, he added.

Presiding over the event, Principal H R Lakshminarayana said that Swami Vivekananda was the person who was filled with culture.

He also said that students have maintained silence throughout the programme and this shows that Vivekananada has changed the mind set of students through the words of Soolibele.  This is a spiritual patriotism, he said.
